Touchet School District Receives Funds to Ensure Children Are Ready to Learn in September
Touchet School District received a grant for $4,000.00 to ensure that children in Touchet eat healthy food and stay engaged in literacy enrichment activities all summer long. The grant was made possible through Feed Your Brain, a collaborative project involving School's Out Washington, the Children's Alliance and the Discuren Charitable Foundation. Additional funding was provided by the Community Foundation of North Central Washington and the Kirlin Foundation.
Touchet School District runs their summer program at 90 Champion Street. Children will be engaged in a variety of academic enrichment activities and will receive free meals. Children do not have to sign up for the free meals. The food is made possible through the US Department of Agriculture's Summer Food Service Program. The grant meets two goals: alleviating childhood hunger in Touchet and engaging children in constructive literary enrichment activities all summer long. Most people think that childhood hunger is most acute in the winter months, but studies show that summer is the hardest time for children to find consistent meals. Families who depend on free school meals to help with food bills are often overwhelmed and turn to food banks. Nationwide demand at food banks increases by 30% each summer.
"We don't only want to feed children's stomachs; we also want to feed their minds," said Lauren Rachal, the Contracted Grants and Contracts Specialist at School's Out Washington who is administering the Feed Your Brain grants. "By adding an academic enrichment component to the summer food program, we can ensure that children in rural communities have opportunities to learn and grow. This gives families in these communities an option for keeping children safe, fed and engaged in educational activities."
School's Out Washington is a non-profit organization that supports programs serving children during the times that they are not in school by offering training, advocacy and leadership. the Children's Alliance is a statewide advocacy organization working to help all children in Washington have what they need to thrive. The Discuren Charitable Foundation is committed to helping children discover their place in the world.
